How refreshingly honest to hear the comments from Sir Jonathan Porritt this week at the Reset Connect Conference in London. In his talk ‘Enough of a delay on Net Zero’ Mr Porritt outlined his views on the UK Government losing it way. He said that the UK Government is ‘The world leader on setting targets and one of the best for strategizing, yet on implementation we are woeful’.
Referring to an ill judged, and so far, unsuccessful heat pump target, Jonathan rightly exposes the lack of action over the ability to set targets and argues we should not put faith in governments to help mitigate climate change. Governments are too focused on maintaining the status quo and as Jonathan says with “One foot in both the fossils fuel and renewable energy camps.”
Look to yourself.
Successful decarbonisation is going to be down the individual, the doer, and crucially the sustainability and energy leaders in businesses or organisations to make progress happen. As we in Rutland Forums can attest, collaborating by sector really makes a huge difference.
