Many thanks to Mark Dunk from the Energy Networks Association for leading an Online Workshop on 11th October for members. Mark gave his perspective on the planning and resilience of the UK power (electricity) markets, and contingency planning in the event of power blackouts. Albeit an unlikely occurrence this is high on the public agenda. Thanks to Mark, members are clear as to what actions, if any, they’ll need to take.

- The Electricity Supply Emergency Code (ESEC) describes steps which would be triggered should the UK have a supply emergency.
- This ESEC process is triggered by the Secretary of State should other prior measures be insufficient, such as demand response.
- Power is ‘proactively’ cut off by post code and meter label for a three 3-hour blocks (with the frequency being dictated by the severity of the shortage).
