Recent research has shown that employees are feeling more vulnerable and at greater risk of burnout. As a result of uncertainty and increasing demands, sustainability practitioners have been amongst the most impacted.
The last two years have placed sustainability issues firmly at the heart of company discussions. This amplified position has increased what for many was already a demanding, and potentially stressful, profession dealing with society’s most challenging issues. With increasing awareness of the task ahead climate anxiety is on the rise:
- Roles require managing diverse stakeholders and guiding the organisation through difficult decisions with long term implications; often pitting incomplete information against an expectation you will have all the answers. The constant state of flux can be draining.
- The desire to create a positive impact can be overwhelming in the current global climate. An endless cycle of negative environmental news, reports of inequity and conflict, can result in feeling helpless. A sense of always more to do, and our own unforgiving expectations, becomes overwhelming over time.
The urge to endure rather than recharge is overpowering. To achieve our collective sustainability goals, recognising the impact of work-life demands, it is vital we build up our resilience to protect, promote and restore our mental health and avoid feelings of overwhelm.
